GA-1: DISEC - Determining the roles of Private Military and Security Companies (PMSCs) in international and national armament
With the beginning of the 21st century, the battlefield expanded beyond the control of national governments. Private Military and Security Companies (PMSC’s) with their wide range of support, in logistics or direct combat operations, began to become one of the key players especially in global conflicts. But their growing effect creates critical questions: Are these private forces a helpful resource to ensure global security or a threat to the government’s authority and peace?
This year in HASALMUN, in GA:1 DISEC committee, the delegates’ main aim is to unriddle the complicated dynamics of PMSCs in international and national armament. Is it possible to balance their relative efficiency with the risk of unrestrained power? Can accountability and transparency be ensured by international and national regulations, or will these PMSCs continue to serve in legal grey zones?
Most of these questions and much more still remain unsolved. The delegates will be engaging in heated debates to put an order to unchecked power within the control of the different companies, while still interrogating their influence on human rights and international law. The outcome of this committee will have deep rooting effects on the regulations and role of PMSCs, determining the future of global military operations.
