UNSC: Questioning the veto power, and reforming the UNSC to enhance its efficacy
The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) came into existence on 24th of October 1945. After the corrupting World War II 50 governments and a couple of non - governmental organizations attended the San Francisco Conference leading to the foundation of the United Nations (UN). Over the years UNSC has actively taken a role in many historical events, showing their power and claiming they do the right thing. As British historian Paul Kennedy states, "Glaring failures had not only accompanied the UN's many achievements, they overshadowed them". UNSC had decisions which were open to discussion as well as rules which were criticized. The veto power is one of the most commonly discussed and opposed rules. Permanent members of the Council have the power to pass or reject a paper with veto power. Do you think this enhances efficacy? Is UNSC a successful organ of the UN? If yes, can the efficacy be enhanced? In HASALMUN you will have the opportunity to question the veto power and try to reform UNSC in a better, more democratic, efficient and powerful way.
